One of the most beautiful beaches in Messinia in the Peloponnese has one of the least attractive names one could possibly imagine. But once you’re actually at Foneas (Greek for killer) Beach in Greece, you won’t be able to help but forget all about its less than fortunate name and fully surrender yourself to its magical landscape instead.
The key feature of Foneas is the huge boulder smack in the middle of the sea, which seems tailored to jumping or diving into the surrounding crystal-clear, blue waters.
Foneas Beach is well hidden by the trees which line the path leading to up it and located quite close to Delfinia Beach—a mere 2.5 miles (4 km) southeast of Kardamyli on the road to Laconia in the Peloponnese.
Marking where the famous Foneas Gorge comes to an end, it is understandably one of the most beloved places for locals in the summer, and it is still a well-kept secret! Foneas Beach is a favorite spot for locals, but it’s never crowded, making it the absolute perfect place for a peaceful beach getaway.
The origin of the name “Foneas Beach”
There are various legends as to the origin of the beach’s name. The most common one concerns a pirate who was shipwrecked and beached there. He was said to have hidden in the nearby cave until his ship was repaired, and, in the meantime, as rumor has it, he would rob and kill all passers-by, hence the unlucky beach naming issue.
However, despite the less than appealing name, Foneas is truly one of the most beautiful beaches in the Peloponnese. It is a pebble beach with crystal-clear, blue-green waters and a verdant natural landscape with rocky cliffs surrounding it.
A small, lone cantina sells beverages on the beach, and there are absolutely no umbrellas or sunbeds, so one needs to go well prepared with their own supplies for the outing. Nonetheless, once there, one is bound to overlook the lack of amenities and simply enjoy the pristine waters and imposing natural scenery.
The untouched beauty of the site is unparalleled, and it is widely considered one of the most stunning beaches in the area.
The Peloponnese is home to beautiful beaches
The Peloponnese region is home to various types of historical and cultural sites, as well as mind-boggling landscapes for tourists looking for an unforgettable vacation in Greece.
Though the Eastern Mediterranean country is one of the most well-visited destinations in the world, tourists generally tend to congregate in a few designated spots, mostly Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini. Nonetheless, as more travelers venture off the beaten path, the Peloponnese is undoubtedly becoming a beloved destination.
The region retains a great deal of authenticity in its small towns, which lures many travelers there, and the peninsula also offers exquisite, locally-grown gourmet delicacies, greatly valued and sought out by tourists.
