For surfers and swimmers alike, sharks make the most noise when it comes to fear of what’s lurking below. Whether it’s from Hollywood, media, or some innate terror within, sharks spark dread unlike almost anything else in the ocean – despite the stats on attacks not supporting such trepidation.

You’ve probably heard the comparisons. Things like…you’re more likely to get struck by lightning than get attacked by a shark; bees are deadlier than sharks; fireworks kill more people annually than shark attacks; et al.

Well, here’s another one to add to the list: On average, sharks are responsible for five or six human deaths each year, whereas crocodiles account for 1,000 casualties per annum.
