What is Cryotherapy? Cryotherapy is exposure of the body to very low temperatures. It was originally discovered by the Japanese in 1978 for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Later the technology was refined in Poland and Russia and now exists in the United States. To begin treatment, one steps into a specially designed chamber that elevates you to have your head above the cylinder. One wears socks, underwear, and gloves. Clients are then sprayed with a dry nitrogen mist that chills the skin. The skin temperature is only lowered for a few minutes, but despite the short duration, the results are profound as the brain signals the body to undertake certain physiological changes. The extreme cold encourages a survival response where the body will ultimately increase caloric expenditure to fight decreased temperature.

The intense cooling induces a vast  number of number of giant physiological changes in the body. Initially, the brain tells the blood vessels to constrict and blood moves away from the limbs and towards the organs to maintain core temperature. This is protective and a natural measure that the body takes in response to the extreme cold. Toxins are flushed from peripheral tissues and blood is enriched with oxygen, enzymes, and nutrients. In the process, several systems with the body are affected and it is that the benefits begin. As the body warms up again, the enriched blood flows back through the body through vasodilatation and assists in tissue repair, reduction of chronic pain and chronic inflammation.

The response burns up to 800 calories in 3-5 minutes. In the fat tissue, metabolic preference for energy choses the brown fat which ultimately increase metabolic efficiency and decreases excess visceral and superficial body fat.

The drop in the skin temperature stimulates the body’s immune response and increases anti-oxidant capacity while improving parasympathetic tone leaving the client with a stark stress relief. The cold decreases circulation and thus decreases inflammation. Improvement of sleep is also increased with the parasympathetic effects on the body. These reactions decrease inflammation and pain. This occurs very quickly and has a myriad of benefits to one’s health.

In addition to the immune response, circulation, detoxification, and tissue repair are greatly increased. WBC stimulates the sensory organs, and the brain as well. Inflammation is also decreased by the cold decreasing circulation.

One of the most astonishing aspects of cryotherapy is how many different types of medical conditions it can improve. It improves arthritis and mobility, fibromyalgia, weight loss, diabetes, neuropathies, and chronic fatigue immune deficiency

syndrome. It is also effective in rheumatological and autoimmune diseases like MS, SLE, ankylosing spondylosis, psoriasis, and osteoporosis. It lessens the signs and symptoms of these diseases by getting to the root cause; chronic inflammation.

It is also very effective in sport recovery. The pre and post physical activity usage of cryotherapy is becoming increasingly popular as one experiences the decreased perception of soreness and increased recovery and tissue repair after muscle overload.

There have been many European studies on the success of overcoming anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders. Many attribute this success to the re-establishment of hormonal decline from correcting the chronic inflammation. DHEA and testosterone are increased while cortisol is decreased.

Despite all these benefits above,In saying t his, still the number one reason most people seek out WBC is for pain. The extreme cold triggers receptors through out the body and brain which has been shown to override the sense of pain.

Contra indications: cardia pacemaker, active cancer, stroke or heart attack under 12 months, and any decompensating diseases.
